September 22, 2009 - Pat Spends a Day on a Hayes HDX with Steve Drybrough
Welcome aboard, let's go for a ride in the forest of Vancouver Island, BC. My name is Steve Dryborough and I have been driving this Hayes off road logging truck for 35 years. This 1975 Hayes HDX is on it's third engine now a C15 Cat. 600HP coupled to a Allison 6061 6 speed and 13-1 Clarke rear ends. I run 40,000 Kg. empty and over 200,000 Kg. loaded. 15 foot wide log bunks and 7 foot high stakes handle the load. With over 543,000 off road miles this truck rides and drives like new thanks to Steve's care since it was new. Patrick Russell is riding along with Steve and taking the photos, except for this one which Steve took.

Steve has made friends with this raven, which Steve calls, "Mr Bird." We were driving along when he gave two short blast of his air horn and one quick blast of the Jake brake. The next thingĀ I knew there was a Raven flying along side Steve looking him eye to eye. Steve brought #17 to a stop, grabbed a bag and climbed down off the truck. Steve hands the raven a cookie. The raven then puts the cookie on the ground. Steve hands the raven another cookie, the raven lays it on top of the other cookie. Steve and the raven do this until there is a pile of about six cookies. Then the raven puts all the cookies in his beak and then flies away.
