Here's a then almost new IH Transtar II exiting from Exit 3 of the Mass Pike onto S. bound U.S. 202 toward downtown Westfield in summer 1974. Channel Master from NY State ran this very clean fleet of Mack's to distribute their better television reception products back before cable became the norm. This was in late 1974 along U.S. 5 in W. Springfield. Glosson Motor Lines from Lexington Motor Lines was a long time furniture hauler up and down the East Coast that eventually sold out to Epes Transport System. This was taken in in early 1975 by the Mr. Donut shop along U.S. 5 in W. Springfield.
Pennsylvania House Traditional Furniture from Lewisburg, PA with this Rollins Leasing Mack came to Westfield probably weekly while I was growing up. I shot it while driving by in my Dad's 74 Chevy Impala in spring 1975 in front of Doc's Smoke Shop in downtown Westfield on U.S. 202. Now this Pete leased on to steel hauler Youngstown Cartage from Youngstown, OH was extra sharp. I'd see him from time to time in my local travels but never could get a photo until one day when I saw it parked near Agawam, MA in summer 1974. O/O something Jeffers from somewhere in Florida at the Springfield farmer's market sometime in 1974.
James Fleming Trucking, Inc. from Suffield, CT was a small farm & reefer fleet that ran some nice Brockway's when I was growing up. I found these two parked in downtown Springfield, MA in early 1975. This Jordan Truck Lines agent (I guess) for MEFS-Midwest Emery Freight System was making his way through downtown Westfield on U.S. 202 when I stopped my bike and got him during the summer of 1973. Lake Erie Trans. was a mail hauler out of Western NY State and reguarly came to Springfield, MA. #89 was stopped at the Valley View Diner where I-91 croses over U.S. 5 in W. Springfield in early 1975.
I believe Parkhill Truck Co. was either an agent for or was acquired by Tri-State Motor Transit because if you look at the lettering on the tarp it reads Tri-State. He was stopped just before the Mass Pike Exit 4 toolbooth in W. Springfield in 1974. This W Ford was from Thief River Falls, MN and delivered a load of snowmobiles to a distributor in Westfield in summer 1973. He had parked across from the entrance to the Mass Pike Exit 3 when I pedaled up on my bike and shot him. This was an O/O leased to the old Transamerican Freight Lines out of Detroit who was delivering to the Springfield farmer's market in early 1975.
A private manufacturing fleet from Miami, Oklahoma near that L.T.L. motel where U.S. 20 & U.S. 5 met in W. Springfield summer 1974. I shot this Dodge out in front of Central Storage/Anderson & Benson Movers in downtown Springfield during the summer in 1974. Bedbuggers were frequently stopped right where I took this shot which was just down the road from Hamden Beef. This "half pint" IH Emeryville for Republic Van Lines from Baltimore, MD was at the Valley Veiw Diner along U.S. 5 in W. Springfield sometime in late 1974.
I shot this pea green Pete day cab leased to Jones Motor Co.'s Lancer Special Commodities Div. about sunset at the Marquis Texaco on U.S. 5 in W. Springfield in the fall of 1974. Came across this F/L COE pulling this extended trailer at the 1st Eastbound Mass Turnpike service plaza just East of the NY/Mass line during summer 1974. Here's another load of power line transmission tower steel waiting to get unloaded at that utility construction site N. of Westfield, MA in summer 1974 with the unit's owner leased on with Eagle Motor Lines Birmingham, AL.
This O/O belonged to Overdrive Magazine's Roadmaster's association and had his KW leased on With Milton Trans. from Milton, PA. The location was at the Boxmaker's plant near Exit 3 of the Mass Pike in Westfield in 1974. Colonial Cookies White Freightliner back in next to an old Century trailer in W. Springfield in early 1975. I'm not sure if this was the Minnesota based Century or not and if it is, how the trailer wound up in MA? Frank Foxworth out of Pompano Beach, FL had made it to the Springfield farmer's market in Summer 1974 with his Autocar.
This is an odd combination of names. The cab is lettered R.H. Abend Corp. and the trailer NonPareil Potatos and Onions and below that is some packing company. At any rate he was at the Pioneer Valley Ref. Warehouse in spring of 1975 with this classic looking Diamond Reo. I think this is one sharp Mack Western this O/O had to Schanno of Minnesota that was parked across from the Shamrock Motel along U.S. 5 in West Springfield in 1974. Schanno O/O's were a very common sight around Springfield when I was taking pictures. American Seal Mfg. Co. Inc. Troy, NY was having a trailer tire repaired at the Marquis Texaco in early 1975.
Caught this unidentified Autocar with what looks like a Christmas tree hauling trailer on U.S. 20 in downtown W. Springfield, MA sometime between Thanksgiving & Christmas 1974. An O/O leased to Dallas & Mavis Forwarding fueling up at Marquis Texaco in summer 1974. G.B.C. Inc. was a furniture hauler from Morristown, TN that I think became Roy Widener Motor Lines. This White 7400 was unloading at the Berkline Furniture warehouse in W. Springfield during 1974.
A "tough looking" KW leased to RFX Boston, (now Avon) MA at Pioneer Valley Ref Warehouse in spring 1975. Finast Supermarkets, long gone now but they were formally known as First National Stores and had stores around Southern New England. The driver of this L Ford was waiting his turn to back into the receiving dock behind the Westfield, MA Finast grocery in early 1975. These Dodge's formally belonged to M and G Convoy from Buffalo, NY however when I took this shot in Jan. 1976 along U.S. 20 near Palmer, MA Ryder Systems had already "Ryderized" them into their traditional yellow and the M And G name was gone.
Mass 10 Truck Stop in Jan. 1976 was the sight of this Dodge whose owner had leased on with Momsen Trucking Co. Inc. from Dubuque, IA. Momsen had both steel and reefer divisions and were a common sight in Southern New England in the early -mid 70's. The morning after a big early 1975 snowstorm found the driver's of this Moss Trucking White 7400's from Charlotte, NC eating breakfast at the A & W Root Beer restaurant along U.S. 202 near downtown Westfield. No name on this Autocar that was parked along U.S. 5 in W. Springfield in early 1975 as evening approached at a closed up Sunoco gas station.
C-F 118-106 I saw stopped by Exit 3 of the Mass Pike so I pedaled on over to on my bike during summer of 1973 and got this photo. About what year was this unit CF fans? Pathmark Supermarket deliveries were handled by PTC Paul's Trucking Corp. from some city in North Jersey. This Mercedes was delivering to the grocery on Memorial Drive near Westover AFB in Chicopee, MA back in early 1975. Elliott Bros. Trucking Co. from Easton, MD 1974 in W. Springfield where their drop yard was.
McLaughlin Mayflower at the Valley View Diner in 1974 where I-91 & U.S. 5 meet in W. Springfield. Western Iowa Pork also at Valley View Diner in 1974. ARCO Diamond Reo at Secondi Bros. Texaco in Summer 1974. I wonder if one of the Secondi Bros. told the driver, 'hey buddy, get that ARCO truck off of my Texaco lot"!!
O/O leased to furniture hauler Mural Transport from Brunswick, NJ early 1975 at the L.T.L. motel where U.S. 5 & U.S. 20 met in W. Springfield. I believe that's a Ryder/ Byrn's Motor Express W Ford tractor next to the KW. Worster Motor Lines from North East, PA I believe also ran an O/O reefer div. at one time called Worster of Iowa. This IH 4300 was at the Pioneer Valley Ref. Warehouse in Springfield in early 1975. In Nov. 1974 I passed this E.bound Mass Turnpike Authority new Oshkosh sander/plow unit just East of Exit 3 as he was coming back from salting/sanding a section of the Mass Pike up in the Berkshires.
Warehouse Transport was the contract hauler for A & P Grocery Stores when I was growing up. A & P used this "Weeeeo" theme for a long while in the 70's which everyone use to say, got sick of hearing it! I shot this IH Fleetstar at the old A & P on U.S. 20 in downtown Westfield in early 1975. Exxon had a neat fleet to make local deliveries as this White 4000 shows. This unit was dropping at an Exxon station on U.S. 5 in W. Springfield in early 1975. Anchor Motor Freight Chevy's and GMC's were everywhere delivering cars when I was growing up. This Chevy had just pulled into a W. Springfield dealership when I pulled up for the shot. So many fleets that are only memories now who I thought would always be around.
Early 1974 found this White Western Star Westbound on the Mass Pike passing my secret bicycle hangout spot. In my opinion the West Coast version of the F Mack was a really nice looking machine and this O/O leased to Pittsburgh & New England Trucking from Dravosburg, PA was a great find parked across the street from Sterling Radiator in Westfield in the spring of 1975. A very clean refrigerator white Diamond Reo void of any cab lettering or decals sitting on Union St. in W. Springfield in early 1975.
Trans-Cold Express from Dallas, TX at a motel along U.S. 5 in W. Springfield in early 1975. An R Mack for Texaco stopped in W. Springfield on MA Route 147 in early 1975. Here's an off the normal beat picture for me. A City of Chicopee, MA trash Mack MB. I thought it looked pretty sharp (for a trash hauler) sitting in the snow in early 1975. That's an ISMF P & D Ford in the background.
LaBar Truck Rental. I believe they were from PA and mostly were used by mailhaulers into and out of the big Springfield bulk mail center in Indian Orchard, MA. This Transtar was layed over at the L.T.L. motel in W.Springfield in early 1975 with a W.T. Byrns Motor Express KW next to it. This sure looks like a Zavitz rig from(Niagara Falls?) Ontario.
