Pete COE leased on with Safeway Truck Lines was keeping company with this Avis Rental GMC Astro at the diesel pumps on the Mass. Turnpike W. bound service plaza near Auburn, MA back in the summer of 1972. GMC Astro leased to C & H Transportation was delivering prefabricated materials for a new car wash being build in downtown Westfield, MA in 1972 Flexi-Van from New Haven, CT owned this F Mack I shot in Springfield, MA in 1973
Leon Johnsrud was the owner of this IH Transtar II that was delivering in downtown Springfield, MA in 1975 M & G Convoy Dodge at the Westfield, MA Hojo's Restaurant lot during the summer of 1974 after they had sold to Ryder System A "tough" looking KW COE leased on with Dubuque, IA based Rowley Interstate with a load of meat in Springfield, MA during the summer of 1974. Rowley was one of my early "favorite fleets" before I left home for the service in 1975
Here is an O/O who also had his Diamond Reo leased on with Transamerican Freight Lines reefer div. and was parked by his home near Holyoke, MA in the summer of 1972. This O/O was Leased to Transamerican Freight Lines who stopped across from the entrance to the Mass Pike Exit 3 in 1973 Albert Farms KW from Slocum, RI was turning onto Mass Turnpike entrance ramp from U.S. 202 in early 1973.
A very dirty Ellsworth Freight Lines IH Transtar from Iowa delivering a load to the Springfield, MA farmers market complex in early 1974. Starcraft Boats IH D model from Indiana A Westfield in early 1974. That red & white checkered thing over the spare tire on the L. rear of the tractor is the top of the water tower of the former Savage Arms gun plant that was right next to the Mass. Pike. Tri-State Motor Transit drom Freightliner parked @ a motel along U.S. 202 near Westfield, MA in early 1973. They delivered munitions to the 104th Fighter Wing of the Mass. ANG at Barnes Municipal Airport in Westfield.
Freigtliner live stock hauler shot in 1976 at Terminal Stations Parker Refrigerated Sevice from Tacoma, WA use to be one of my West Coast favorite fleets because of the nicely painted KW Conv.'s they use to operate shot in 1976 at Terminal Stations. IH Emeryville was one of several that T & K Expressways out of Vacaville, CA use to use to pull containers out of the Port of Oakland with. As you can see by the little sign in the window with their logo on it they rented office space at Terminal Stations. I always thought the Emeryville was a sleek looking COE for it's day as compared to some of the other OEM designs. Shot in 1976 at Terminal Stations
Unidentified Peterbilt tanker shot in 1976 at Terminal Stations This was the only time I ever saw a St Johnsbury pulling an Akers Motor Lines trailer and it was a "ragtop" no less. He was stopped at the Redwood Restaurant a.k.a. Tasty Freeze on U.S. 202 N. of Westfield, MA in 1974. From the end of the street I grew up on the Tasty Freeze was about 1/2 mi. N. on U.S. 202 so before I got my license, I could see when a truck was stopped there and would pedal up there on my bike as fast as I could and hopefully get a picture before the rig would drive off. The lettering on the cab of this White Freightliner appears to read All Service Corp. Charlotte, NC and was off-loading at the Springfield, MA farmers market complex right off U.S. 20 in 1974.
Lyon Van Lines Mack Western W. bound on the Mass Pike shot from my "secret" hangout/hiding spot just E. of Exit 3 in 1973. This snazzing looking Mack leased on with Spector Freight Systems Special Commodities division turning onto the Mass Pike Exit 3 entrance ramp from N. bound U.S. 202 in 1974. This GMC Astro was stopped at a pullout along E. bound I-90 (Mass Pike) a little E. of Exit 3 in 1974.
This is one of my very first color shots taken in early 1972 of an O/O leased to building materials hauler H. Prang Trucking out of Waltham, MA while he was being off-loaded at O'Connor Lumber's lot in Westfield, MA. Here's a sharp KW big bunk COE leased on with Detroit, MI based Transamerican Freight Lines steel div. rolling W. bound on the Mass Pike a little East of Palmer, MA in early 1973. Early 1974 saw this White Freightliner unloading at the Springfield, MA farmers market.
Newton Falls Paper Mill Corp from Newton Falls, NY at Old Colony Envelope in downtown Westfield, MA in early 1973. This Millsboro, DE based White Freightliner was delivering to the Springfield, MA farmer's market during 1974. This O/O leased his W model Ford to ICCC (Interstate Contract Carrier Corp.) from Salt Lake City, UT was visiting the Marquis Texaco Truck Stop on U.S. 5 in W. Springfield, MA in early 1974.
There is an intersting story behind this shot of this Pete COE leased to ICCC. Right after I took this picture at the motel that most of the LTL's used where U.S. 5 & U.S. 20 met in W. Springfield and drove off on U.S. 5 I was pulled over by the W. Springfield Police with blue lights flashing. The two cops walked up to the startled 17 year old that I was and asked why I was taking pictures because one of the drivers saw me and called the local police. It turned out they were hauling dynamite and had dropped their trailers at a "safe haven" while they rested. After I "splained" to the officers that I took truck pictures as a hobby they walked back to their car scratching their heads . This 1974 incident remains to this day as the only time I've ever been stopped and questioned by the police for taking truck pictures
Back end of a bulker and the Grand Auto twins that were stopped at the Muffin Treat along I-80 near Fairfield, CA in 1976. KW COE was parked at Terminal Stations in 1976 Good looking Pete with transfer dump trailer was resting alongside the Insured Transporters Astro at The Muffin Treat near Fairfield, CA in 1976. Those set ups were very popular when I was stationed out there in the mid-late 70's.
Unidentified Kenworth with an interesting paint scheme Furman Lumber from Boston, MA was bringing in a load of lumber on this Brockway to O'Connor Lumber in Westfield in 1973. This Quebec based Sicard found his way to O'Connor Lumber in 1973. They were a very rare sight South of the Canadian border and around Western Mass. where I grew up.
Union Carbide from their Suffield, CT plant use to run these Autocars around New England when I took this picture in early 1974 at the Westfield, MA Hojo's. Boise Cascade GMC Astro on the same very cloudy day I did the Union Carbide Autocar. Bekins KW shot at Terminal Stations in early 1976
A single axle IH Transtar with twin was leased on with International Transport from Rochester, MN. I think this was the only time I ever saw a set of twins for the heavy & specialized hauler that IT was. Here is a clean looking Pete for Shell Oil from their Martinez, CA refinery dropping a load in Fairfield, CA near the main gate of Travis AFB sometime in 1976. Valley Livestock Transport Dixon, CA was a real common sight running up and down I-5 & CA 99. This one stopped by Terminal Stations along I-80 in Feb. 1976.
This Jamestown, NY based F Mack for Anderson Trucking was layed over at a W. Springfield, MA motel along U.S. 5 in 1974. Note the nameplate on the nose of this Hudson Cement rig. Is it a Mack or is it a CCC? I'm not 100% sure, perhaps a fellow truck buff could help out here. I shot him as he just came off Mass Pike Exit 3 onto S. bound U.S. 202 in early spring 1973. The snow was still melting but that was good enough to be out there on my bicycle looking for trucks to photograph. This extra sharp looking KW leased to Transamerican Feight Lines was being offloaded at Sterling Radiator in Westfield, MA in 1974.
Here is a Peterbilt that I can't quite read the lettering on the cab doors parked out on the access road to the Springfield, MA farmer's market in 1974.
This Brockway COE for Bross was easing to a stop at the toll booth of Exit 4 (I-91) of the Mass Pike in 1974. How's this for a winter front over the radiator of this Salinas, CA based Pete 352 for Englund Equipment Co! This was early 1975 at the motel where U.S. 20 & U.S. 5 meet in W. Springfield, MA. This was an odd mix n match of two fleets back in 1974. The O/O was leased to Jay Lines from Amarillo, TX but was pulling a Schaffer from New Kingston, PA reefer trailer . Lewis Beef was right off of U.S. 20 at the entrance to the Springfield, MA farmer's market.
Here's what that motel at U.S. 20 & U.S. 5 hosted more of than any other segment of America's trucking industry, L.T.L. fleet tractors. Ryder Truck Lines and MFX were very regular customer's in early 1975 when I shot this. Fredericksen Tank Lines from W. Sacramento, CA always had KW's and used these pull trailers when I lived in CA. This was April 1976 at Terminal Stations. Here is a good sampling of the type of ag haulers that were so common throughout the massive agricultural regions in the valleys in California. April 1976 is the date of this shot at Terminal Stations.
Pyramid Van Lines from Cleveland, OH (I think) they must have been a West Coast or a military moves specialist as they were a frequent visitor at Terminal Stations like this Pete was in April 1976. Back in the 70's Trans American Van Lines was quite a large operation but disappeared almost as quickly as they grew or so it seemed. This Pete COE was stopped at the Muffin Treat along I-80 near Fairfield, CA in 1976. One of my early color shots of this Pete COE leased on with what looks like a Spector Freight System logo that was stopped at the W.bound Mass. Turnpike service plaza near Auburn, MA during the summer of 1972.
Tyson Foods from Springdale, AR parked behind Valle's Steakhouse on U.S. 20 in Springfield, MA in 1974. This unidentified IH 4300 was at the Marquis truck Stop on U.S. 5 in W. Springfield in 1974 getting a tire repair on the rightside lead tandem of the trailer. A tollbooth on the Maine Turnpike during summer 1972 was the setting for this KWCOE I shot out the rear window of my Dad's car while on our way back to Westfield from a family vacation at Sebago Lake, ME.
This old Dodge COE I shot in 1976 for Basic Materials Transport from Sacramento near my dorm on Travis AFB, CA kind of has an L.T.L. look to it I think! April 1976 found this Foremost Dairies from one of the East Bay area cities near Oakland, CA parked at the Muffin Treat next to this empty "parking lot" Freightliner COE. Here is a line-up at the Muffin Treat along I-80 one morning in 1976. Rigs from all segments of trucking were always coming and going from that restaurant it seemed.
The Freighliner COE in this shot was for West Coast Truck Lines, Eugene, OR and the Pete COE taken at Terminal Stations in 1976 almost looks like an ex: Peters Truck Lines unit but I think it was just a coincidence. The KW Conv. in this 1976 lineup at Terminal Stations belonged to Acme Tank Lines from San Pablo, CA which was a heavily industrialized city on the East side of San Francisco Bay near where the Carquinez Straights head inland. Here's two of Commercial Carriers, Inc. auto haulers out of Romulus, MI at Terminal Stations in 1976. They must have had a California railhead operation as I highly doubt they transported cars over the highway all the way out of Michigan to the West Coast.
A pretty sharp Pete COE leased onto Pyramid Van Lines at Terminal Stations in 1976. Syar Industries from Vallejo, CA was a major aggregate hauler in and around the Fairfield/Vacaville/Vallejo areas of California. They ran a wide variety of types of dump bodies however, IH was their sole OEM truck supplier during the years I was there. This unit was paused at the Muffin Treat in 1976. Our neighbors on Meadowbrook Lane (The street I grew up on) were co-owners of a Wise Potato Chip distributorship in Westfield and P.L. Lawton from Berwick, PA was one of several fleets who made weekly deliveries to the warehouse. I managed to "pose" my trusty and shiny 10 speed bicycle in the background on this shot taken during 1973.
A very winter weary looking "Brock" whose owner was leased on with Preston's reefer div.at the Marquis Texaco on U.S. 5 in W. Springfield during the winter of 1973-74. Early 1974 found Ryder Truck Lines unit 73-166 waiting for it's driver to get out of bed at the motel where U.S. 20 & U.S. 5 met in W. Springfield, MA and head back to points South of Western Mass. Not sure what fleet this O/O had his KW COE leased on with but I'm sure he was delivering to Sterling Radiator in Westfield, MA in 1974.
