20 New Kenworths Join Arrow Fleet
Information and photographs furnished through Bill Nelson, Roberts Motor Company, Portland, Oregon
There are 20 brand new Kenworth 925’s in the fleet of Arrow Transportation Company--delivered just last month by Roberts Motor Company, Kenworth distributors.
And they weren’t a bit lonesome, because they found other Kenworths there in service among the big Arrow fleet of 82 highway haulers.
Dating back to 1931, Arrow Transportation Company is one of the pioneer petroleum trucking firms in the Pacific Northwest, and today certainly one of the largest. Arrow transports bulk petroleum in the states of Oregon, Washington and Idaho. The firm’s headquarters are in Portland and other terminals are located at Pasco, Seattle and Spokane, Washington and Boise, Idaho. Repair facilities are maintained at all locations except Boise.
The Arrow fleet operates an average of 4,500,000 miles a year, with most units piling up about 80,000 miles annually. The trucks gross out at 78,000 pounds when operating in Washington. The new Kenworths, road-ready, complete with trailer, weigh in at 22,000 pounds, allowing a 56,000 pound payload under the 78,000 gross combination weight. In Oregon and Idaho during the summer months, this means a payload of 8,900 gallons of regular gasoline.
Such payloads are achieved through Kenworth’s lightweight engineering on the truck and aluminum tanks on both truck and trailer. The 225-horsepower W-925;s feature Kenworth’s light-weight spherical torsion suspension; aluminum cases on the four-speed main and auxiliary transmissions; aluminum frame, bumper, cab, sheet metal. The tilting “Unitplas” hood of fiber glass is another weight saver.
Arrow Transportation Company is headed by James Cutler, president. Other officials include C. B. Stevens, vice president in charge of sales; W. A. Scott, vice president in charge of operations; and P.A. MacDonald, who is the controller.
