HISTORY OF THE COMPANY


MOTORWAY'S DEVELOPMENT

Motorways; a company rich in transportation history involving acquisitions, mergers and sharp management instincts, expanded their size as well as their coverage until Motorways is recognized as one of the leading transportation companies in Canada.

The following names and dates are indicative of Motorway's growth over the years.

1929     George and J.S. Hall, a full supply delivery service operating in the Ottawa area, incorporated Motorways first.
1950's     Through the years the names to follow emerged as a part of the Motorways family.
      J.M. Atwell became a major force in Canadian truck transportation by putting several companies together to form "Canadian Motorway". Hill The Mover from Hamilton was one such acquisition along with Motorways (Halls); Ottawa and Corney Transport; Hamilton. Stan Corney subsequently worked for Motorways Ont. Ltd. in various positions for 54 years. The company then operated under the name of Hill Motorways.
1956     B.E.T. (British Electric Traction) Company of London, England, ran the public transit system in London for 55 years and had controlling interest in the company.
      B.E.T. and J.M. Atwell purchased Security Storage Company Limited to bring the east and west together. Security Storage purchased a number of companies in Western Canada including James Moving and Storage; Calgary and Big 4 Van Lines; Edmonton among others.
      Joe Atwell and Security Storage purchased Soo Security Ltd in 1956. There followed a period during which the company was recognized under various names such as Motorways Van Lines, Hill Security Van Lines, Motorways (Ont) Limited, Motorways (Que) Limited, Motorways (West) Limited.
1957     The "company's" name changed and was then known officially as Canadian Motorways Ltd.
Late 50's & Early 60's
      Some companies involved in Motorway's acquisitions during the late 50's and on into the 60's were: Central Transfer; Victoria, U>Red Deer Cartage, Peacock Van and Storage; Regina. Growth through acquisition continued in Eastern Canada matching the expansion in the West. Maritime based Barnhill Transfer and Moffat and Sons joined as did Wilson Transport; Toronto.
1970     One of the last purchases made by the B.E.T. ownership was that of MacArthur and Sons Ltd; Brandon acquired in 1978.
      * In total more than 30 separate companies were purchased to make up Canadian Motorways Ltd.
      The B.E.T. ownership consolidated its holding and established two divisions; the "Household Goods" operations conducted under the name Hill Security Van Lines while the freight operation was designated as Motorways. Motorways was operated as Motorways (Ont) Ltd and Motorways (West) Ltd.
1979     Cougar Freight Systems a truck load operation became operational in May of that year.
1983     High-Tech Express, specializing in transporting time sensitive, high value cargo was formed.
      Federal Industries Ltd; Winnipeg through its subsidiary White Pass and Yukon Corporation concluded the deal to purchase Motorways. Soon after the acquisition, Federal Industries Ltd sold Hill Security Van Lines.
1985     February - Motorways introduced "Motopak", a small package courier service between points in Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and North West Ontario.
      September - Motorways nearly doubled in size through the acquisition of Direct Transportation System Limited of Toronto, creating Canada's 4th or 5th largest road transportation company, Motorways Direct.
1986     The name Direct was dropped creating a one name, one colour scheme identity again (yellow and black).
1989     In the spring of 1989 Federal Industries purchased Kingsway group of companies which made Kingsway/Motorways one of the largest transportation companies in Canada.
1992     On July 10, 1992, the Intra Ontario, Ontario-Quebec and International portion of Kingsway Transports was sold to Cabano Group of Companies.
