In the early seventies Strickland Transportation took advantage of the trailer length restrictions in some of the states that they operated in, and purchased 120 bbc tractors. The goal was to have the long conventional design and allow the manufacturer to built a more maintenance free tractor as compared to COE's and short hooded tractors. The long hood provide improves access to all components and reduce the maintenance times required. Roadway was famous for this and had their entire fleet converted to long conventionals until they could utilize 45 foot trailers in every state and then the purchase of COE's in Strickland case and short conventionals in Roadway's case was mandated to meet overall length laws. Strickland had their main shop and breakbulk in Little Rock, AR and they published this photograph of theie inspection and fueling lanes in the mid 60's. Notice the drop frame 40ft. trailers with the "Ship" logo. This was before they changed from red to white tractors. Don Querciagrossa Collection.
