| Here are some pictures I took of an old trailer. It is about twenty feet long and belonged to Olin Mathieson Chem.Co. from Charlestown,Indiana. They had a black powder plant there and were contracted to the US Government. If you look at the pictures what makes this trailer stand out is the way the tractor hooked to it. This trailer was manufactured by Fruehauf Trailer Co. And to my knowledge made the only 5th wheel that would work with this trailer. The 5th. Wheel had the king-pin made in to it and when you hook to the trailer the landing gear would fold up. If you look at the slot on the front of the trailer you can see a knob on the right side to release the trailer so the landing gear would come down. On the rear of the trailer there is a 4x4 all the way across so when it was backed in to the dock there would not be any sparks. With black powder one spark and as Barney Fife would say"blueeee" you are dead. Another trucking company called Commercial of Ohio, later called Commercial-Lovelace had some of these trailers and when they interlined them the company had to have Fruehauf 5th.wheels. They had an adaptor that would fit in the 5th. Wheel so that truck line could pull the trailer. But if you pulled the pin on the 5th wheel and not on the trailer you would drop the trailer on its nose. This idea did not hold up very long and was discontinued.
