This picture has 13 of the 14 new 1963 Freightliner while they were brand new.
Notice the trucks first came in with short stacks. They were changed to taller stacks to get the smoke over the top of the trailers.
These tractors ran on a Kansas City to Chicago Relay Operation. The drivers switched at Lincoln, IL. Tpically the trucks accumulated 150,000 to 175,000 hard miles. Much of the route was still 2 lane. From Springfield, IL to Chicago old U.S. Route 66 was a 4 lane divided highway until being replaced by I-55.
Ironically this picture was taken in the parking lot of the Kenworth Truck Plant that was in Kansas City at the time. The KW plant was later closed around 1987.
Quite a deal, 13 new Freightliners using the parking lot of the KW factory for the perfect picture shot. The CKC terminal was about 2 miles from the KW Plant.

| This appears to be the 1945 vintage Dart's in another era. Appears as the Dart's have moved from the Road to the City fleet hand me down program, popular by most LTL carriers then and even today. Trailer a later vintage, my guess mid to late 50's. Probably one of their first 40 footers from the move of previous 35 foot vans. Michael Gully Collection. |
