Trans Provincial Freight Carriers
They are another key player in the movement of freight to and from northern Ontario. Trans-Provincial is a professionally managed large fleet running very diversified equipment from multiaxle air ride heated vans to flatbeds and dump trailers. Trans Provincial trucks were originally painted pale blue and ran F and R model Mack company trucks and brokers ran cabover KW's and White Freightliner in the seventies but by the early eighties the fleet was made up of Louisvilles and S Series and a handful of brokers. With new owners in the mid eighties the paint scheme was changed as we know it today in the white, orange and black. The owners of Trans Pro also own a tank division called Volume with the same paint scheme but yellow instead of orange. Trans Pro is one of my favourite fleets to photograph with there heavy spec'd long wheelbase tractors, light up wind deflectors and cut off deer bumpers that are functional for running the north. Unlike regular bumpers when hit by a deer at road speed the ends won't cave in and take out a steer tire. Head office is in Mississauga with many terminals throughout the north. Freightliner # 1273 was one of the first batch of trucks the new owners bought in the mid eighties. The gray frame predates the orange they're now painted. T800 #1321 taken at the Sault Ste Marie terminal shows the first batch of T800's with dayton wheels. It is hooked to a Roussy 4 axle open top roll tarp van. These were used to haul coils of steel or anything that could be loaded by overhead crane. Unit 1342 taken in Novar, Ont. sits with a big load of Tembec lumber on a 5 axle flatbed. Instead of the Kenworth 8 bag air ride these T800's run on Neway H.D. air ride or Hendrickson rubber block that can take the abuse of the 72" spread on the northern rough roads. The 72" spread is good for 42000 lbs in Ontario instead of 38000lbs on 54" spread suspension. Peterbilt # 1354 hooked to a 3 axle end dump that are used for steel mill, mining and road salt customers. Newer T800 unit 1370 on alluminum buds and pulling an Ontario made 4 axle Mond open top van. This KW has the drop down door windows also the windows in the rear cab corners. Trans Provincial had the first trucks in Ontario to use these windows for driver safe visibility. Another shot of unit 1342 hooked to a 4 axle Manac pulling out of the Happy Landing in South River, Ont. Trans Pro lettered a bunch of trailers to advertise different cities and special events in northern Ontario like this one depicting the town of Kirkland Lake.
Here is another sister company of Trans Provincial which is Volume Tank Lines. Painted in the same scheme except in yellow this Freightliner 120 is pulling a Quebec made Bedard six axle tanker taken near Woodstock, Ontario. Here are some shots of Trans Provincials newest trucks taken at there Sudbury yard in August 2003. The trucks have the new emmission Cat motors so they now have dual stacks. The stake and rack unit has just come in from Sault Ste. Marie and is switching drivers to finish its nightly journey to Toronto.
