On September 2, 2002, Consolidated Freightways filed for Chapter 11 Bankruptcy

CF test unit and one of the first FLDs of the line for Freightliner. CF tested 30 of these in 1988 and then adopted the FLD as it's linehaul unit for several years to come. This was also the first set of doubles that Dave Faust drove in the state of Connecticut as they had a seperate license requirement for doubles which turned into the CDL in later years. Wallingford, CT 11-19-88.
CF 10-976. Also from the group of 30 test units of FLDs. The 30 came split between half with fuel tank skirts and half without. CF had never used skirting before and we all figured the next order would come through like these. Instead these became the oddballs and they were eventually assigned to triples work on the Ohio Turnpike. These tractors also had 100 gallon fuel tanks instead of the usual CF spec 130 gallon tanks. Shot at Wallingford, CF in fall 1988. David Faust Collection.

This is a standard FLD from the next order. Note the lack of aluminum trim on the black plastic bumper and also the tractor number in white numbers on the bumper. Wallingford, CF in 1989. Here is a shot that Dave Faust got from another collector and the photographer is unknown. It is a CF test unit KW COE after it had been downgraded to a city unit. Dave remembers seeing 16-2 and it was an International 9670. They tested a single unit from KW, IH and Ford and picked IH to go against Freightliner as a long term camparison. David Faust Collection.
CF 16-7588. David Faust Collection. CF 24-2494 is a tandem tag axle tractor in Effingham, IL. David Faust Collection. CF 16-7182 is a standard COE at the time. David Faust Collection.
This one shows a CF tractor sporting a test fairing setup that was only used on a handful of tractors. Shot in Denver. Photo by Gary Rich. This is one of the early Freightliner FLC units in the CF fleet shot in Denver. Photo by Gary Rich. Here is another FLC and I think this is a later one (they bought them in two orders and the later ones differed only in that the steps on the fuel tank were a little wider for easier entry) and also shot around Denver in about 1989. Photo by Gary Rich.
CF Freightliner COE in the late 80's at Denver, CO. Photo by Gary Rich. I don't know if this was an original CF tanker or just a CF truck that had a tank body mounted on it, but one thing is for sure, it is a neat looking piece of CF shop equipment! Photo taken at the York,PA breakbulk in the late 1980's. John L. Becker Collection. Consolidated Freightways ready line taken in Kansas City, MO. This was Jim's last run for CF. Jim drove from Kansas City to Marysville, Kansas to load off a wrecked truck. Jim Steele Collection.
A couple more older photos from 1977 taken near Rochester, NY of a then new "Freightliner". This was one of the first units I saw with the nameplate minus the White name. David Faust Collection. CF Freightliner unit #16-3559 was shot near Rochester in 1977. David Faust Collection.
The fresh painted unit was the replacement for 116-2023 and was assigned to me in 1989. The older unit had a Detroit Diesel and 116-6107 had a Cummins. It was a pleasure to drive! Note the bullnose ragtop trailer that was rare even in the CF fleet. David Faust Collection. CF 16-3399 taken west of Syracuse, NY in August 1977. David Faust Collection.
An early FLC and a standard COE. The COEs were frowned upon by line drivers when the conventionals came on the scene. Both shot in 1989 at Wallingford, CT. David Faust Collection. CF 16-4274 taken near Rochester in August 1977 David Faust Collection.
