The Hump

The Hump was BC Highway 3 between Rossland and Cascade (Christina Lake). It was actually two humps, going east from Cascade you climbed up to the top of the hill around many switchbacks almost touching the International Boundary to the Santa Rosa Summit and then down into the Sheep Creek Valley and then up again ten switchbacks to the Velvet Mine and then more or less east into Rossland. In a straight line a distance of 20 miles, but the highway mileage was 40 miles, schedule time was 2 hours! At this time there were two trips each way in the off season, more in summer. The day trips crossed the border at Cascade/Laurier border crossing, the night trips climbed the Hump as the border was closed between midnight and 0800. One year during spring breakup the Washington hwy. bridge at Northport burned and the road between Paterson and Kettle Falls was closed. During the warm part of the day, and with a lot of extra traffic, this was the result. Brassie said it was always muddy during breakup,but at night much better than this. There were seldom a problem with a passenger that was not allowed into the U.S.A. even though no one was allowed on or off between the border crossings. On one trip east, a Penticton spareboard driver was overloading the regular Nelson driver. During the customs inspection, he was called into the office. Imagine the Nelson drivers surprise when his overload driver vaulted over the counter and ran back to the Canadian side at Cascade. The man had spent time working in the US and been eligible for the draft, was called up as this was the time of the Korean War, but returned to Canada. How he was caught is anyone's guess, as this was not the computer age. The regular man called John Learmonth who had to bring a driver from Nelson, there was quite a delay, but the US border guards looked after the people until John and his driver arrived hours later. The Penticton driver caught a ride home on the westbound trip and was not fired, but had to sign an agreement saying he was not allowed east again and if first out to go east, would be passed on the board, and continued working for Greyhound until he retired.

With the opening of the new highway 3, the Blueberry-Paulson Highway,one problem was the Paulson detour road. When the highway opened the Paulson Bridge was not completed for some time. The detour road had two very steep hills,too much for some of the MC1's. Men and boys were asked to walk up the hills,some of the four bangers required women and children to walk as well. You can still see the road just west of the Paulson Bridge and the east end climbing up Walker Creek.
