Northwest Bulk Carriers

Operated by Transco Trucklease (a partnership of Arrow and Mainland Transfer).

Driver, foreman, mechanic and dispatcher in absence of manager (most of the time) and relief driver was Dale Van Horne.

They had six drivers and they made six cents a mile.

The drivers were: Russ Hanna, Stan Hanna, Norman Stephanyshin, Don Austin, Art Wilkie and Doug Haines.

They had three 1959 Kenworth cabovers with 3000 gallon Columbia tanks. Powered by 262 Cummins and 5x4 transmissions.

Dale Van Horne's home was on the bench above the shop and he provided service with a company owned International pickup. He was paid $600 per month.

Northwest Bulk Carriers Kenworth, from Kamloops, BC, taken in April 1960. Norman Stephanishin driver. Norman was the hero of the Hope Slide, which happened on January 9, 1965. It was Norman that stopped two Greyhound coaches from going past the first smaller slide. The coaches turned around and returned to Sumallo Lodge and as a result saved the lives of all passengers on the coaches.
This is what was left of the front axle of the pup trailer after the Hope Slide. Later they found the rest of the trailer, but the truck was never found.
Wrecked Cement Truck straddles Trans Canada Highway after plowing into the side of BC Hydro freight train on the BC Hydro level crossing at Chilliwack on Thursday night. Driver escaped with minor injuries but damage was estimated at $250,000. Truck and freight cars sprawled across all four lanes and blocked traffic for 6 1/2 hours. Highway crews shovelled spilled cement off the road before it cound set.

This picture shows the entrance to Crescent Road from the King George Highway at Elgin, the road continues over the Nicomekl River Dam bridge. The rig on the King George is a Shell single axle (1955 CO-210?) that would have been returning from White Rock going to Burmount. It pulled a tandem axle Columbia or Willock tanker trailer and was usually driven by Alec Shelby. Shelby moved to the KW's after they arrived. I will try to obtain a unit number if you are interested. This tanker would have served Chilliwack and the Fraser Valley. The Olds is a 1956 and I would think it would be about that time. The BC Hwy 499 was built during 58/59 in prep for the opening of the Massey/Deas Tunnel, the photographer would be standing where the exit was later built.
